Allen Oertel

Allen Oertel, P.E., P.G. is serving as Chair of the CESSWI Program Committee.  He recently retired from a 35-year engineering career with the last 26 years spent with the consulting engineering firm of Crawford, Murphy and Tilly in Springfield, Illinois.  Mr. Oertel is licensed professional engineer and carries both the CESSWI and CPESC certifications. He holds Master of Science degrees in both civil engineering and geology.

In his professional career, he concentrated almost exclusively on environmental and water/wastewater issue with a particular emphasis on preparation of erosion control plans, spill prevention control and countermeasure plans and SWPPP preparation for construction, industrial and MS4 facilities.

Early in his retirement he decided he would use some of his newly found free time to assist ECI with conducting CPESC and CESSWI review sessions and volunteered to head up the CESSWI Program Committee.  In addition to his ECI involvement, he is a student mentor for Engineers Without Borders and is chair of the Engineering Advisory Committee for The Mustard Seed Peace Project which a U.S. based charity that assists rural communities in northern Guatemala develop clean water programs for underserved communities.  When not engaged in engineering related pursuits, he is an avid woodworker, travels with his wife Joyce and spends as much time as possible with his family.
